Why Do I Need to Have My Chimney/Flue Swept?

Chimneys need to allow free passage of dangerous combustion gasses. regular cleaning will remove soot and tar deposits, helping prevent dangerous chimney fires.

Cleaning will increase the efficiency of some appliances, also removing bird nests, cobwebs and other blockages which could prevent these gasses from escaping.

How Often Should I Have My Chimney/Flue Swept?

The table below shows the official guidance given by the Guild of Master Sweeps and depends on a number of factors including:

  • Type of fuel
  • Appliance use
  • Duration of use
  • Moisture content of wood (if used)
  • Type of chimney.
